Welcome!

Welcome to 6th grade and our LEAD class! We've made it through the first week of middle school and I am looking forward to a fantastic year on the Silver Snow Leopard team. This week we spent time finding our way around the middle school, learning how to read our schedules, practicing opening our lockers, and meeting new teammates and teachers. We also learned about the expectations and procedures for our team.

In LEAD, we learned that LEAD stands for Language Enrichment Across Disciplines and is a content area reading course that all 6th grade students take. In this course, we explore reading tools and strategies to assist students in the reading of content area material. We also learn about note-taking tools and how to use various graphic organizers. The goal of LEAD is to help students become more successful readers of non-fiction material across the curriculum.

On Tuesday we will start our first unit on the reading process. In this unit we will explore our textbook, the Reader's Handbook, as well as what reading is and the steps and stages of the reading process. All students will be given a packet of notes that they will use for the entire unit and should be kept in the LEAD section of binders. Formal assessments for this unit include two quizzes and a unit test. Dates for these assessments will be given ahead of time to students and should be written in planners as part of the homework assignment.
